TYPES OF MICROSTRUCTURES (cont.)

 

Aggregate microstructures

Crumb. Aggregate material with a crumbly shape.

Granular. With granular aggregates.

In sub-angular blocks. With aggregates in sub-angular blocks.

In angular blocks. With aggregates in angular blocks.

Prismatic. In prismatic aggregates. Due to the size of the aggregates, they are very difficult to see in thin sections.

Platy. With platy aggregates.

Compound microstructures

Complex. Formed of heterogeneous areas with more than one type of structure.

 

Sand grain microstructures

Neither aggregate nor sandy microstructures
