Alteration of organic matter

Chemical alteration affects both soil minerals and organic matter. The residues of organic matter incorporated in the soil at the beginning are individual fragments that clearly show their tissues (many of them are birefringent),

they progressively transform into an amorphous material with a colour that gets darker and darker (losing the initial birefringence)

and finally they integrate, impregnating the soil groundmass.
