Abstract

In this paper we describe the effect of irrigation on the survival of total coliforms in two different soils, one agricultural and the other a degraded soil from a semiarid area. Sewage sludge was applied in the proportion of 50g of sludge per kg of soil. The absence of irrigation produced a sharp decre- ase in the number of total coliforms in both soils with the bacteria disappearing completely after 33 days in degraded soil and 40 days the agricultural soil. Irrigation produced a substantial initial increase in the number of coliforms in both soils, but after 80 days it is not observed coliforms development in both soil
