Abstract

The heavy metal soil content is very frequently used to asses soil environmental quality and his degradation level. For it, is necessary to have available the adequate background for different trace ele- ments. This work shows the results of study of a hundred and three arable layer samples and twelve Ap ho- rizons of different soil types of Campo of Cartagena (Murcia, SE Spain) related to their background for Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn as well as their corresponding baseline levels. They are very calcareous soils (308 g kg-1) generally, with a organic matter content below 14 g kg-1, low values for soluble salts (elec- trolytic conductivity ~ 3 dS m-1) and medium content for clay (24 %). The average total content of cited trace elements are very closed to parent material while there is no differences for two soil uses accounted. The background (VF) and the derived baseline values (VGR) are (mg kg-1), respectively: VF: Cd: 0.22, Co: 7, Cr: 42, Cu: 15, Mn: 277, Ni: 18, Pb: 4, Zn: 47 VGR: Cd: 0.53, Co: 14, Cr: 89, Cu: 40, Mn: 628, Ni: 38, Pb: 44, Zn: 105
